AWS buys DuckLabs to bring DuckDB's embeddable analytics to more enterprises

WHAT HAPPENED
Amazon Web Services acquired DuckLabs B.V., the Amsterdam-based developer of DuckDB, an open-source embeddable analytical database. The deal is expected to close in the next month, with DuckLabs' engineering team joining AWS while maintaining DuckDB as an open-source project under the DuckDB Foundation's stewardship.
WHO IS INVOLVED
AWS, DuckLabs co-founders Hannes Mühleisen and Mark Raasveldt, and the independent DuckDB Foundation are the main parties. DuckDB has achieved over three million downloads per day and is used by AWS S3 customers globally.
WHY IT MATTERS
AWS gains a strong engineering team and accelerates DuckDB's integration with its analytics services while maintaining the project's open-source nature to preserve ecosystem adoption. DuckDB benefits from AWS's infrastructure and global reach to expand its user base, while enterprises can now more easily embed analytics directly into applications without managing separate database infrastructure.
