WHAT HAPPENED
Databricks launched Consort, an open-source agentic development framework that applies test-driven development practices to database schema changes. Consort uses Lakebase Postgres branching to enable developers to create isolated database copies for testing, allowing schema migrations and code to ship together as a single unit.
WHO IS INVOLVED
Databricks built Consort as a framework where team members take on distinct roles—product owner, spec author, architect reviewer, DBA, test strategist, and developer pairs—that work together like a musical ensemble, coordinated by a deterministic conductor rather than a human scrum master.
WHY IT MATTERS
Database branching removes the need for mocks and shared staging environments, bringing real integration testing into the developer's inner loop and catching schema conflicts before production deployment. This shifts high-risk database ceremonies from 2 a.m. emergency fixes to preventive testing during code review.
