WHAT HAPPENED
Huawei launched the Ascend 960DT AI chip scheduled for Q1 2027 and the 960PR for Q3 2027, both arriving three quarters earlier than previously planned. The company also unveiled the Peerium computing architecture designed to connect up to 1 million processors together as a single system, with the new Ascend 960 supernode supporting 4,096 AI processors.
WHO IS INVOLVED
Huawei Technologies and its rotating chairman Eric Xu announced the developments at Huawei Connect in Shanghai. The company is competing with Nvidia and working with Chinese AI model developers who will begin training models on Ascend 950DT systems next year.
WHY IT MATTERS
Huawei said it cannot meet domestic demand in China for AI computing equipment and has limited overseas sales, while claiming its Ascend market share exceeds Nvidia's in China. The company is central to China's strategy to build a domestic AI computing industry independent of US-controlled technology amid US export controls on advanced semiconductor manufacturing.
