WHAT HAPPENED
Databricks launched Funke, a Python and PySpark library that parses HL7v2 healthcare messages directly into native Spark data types while preserving the complete message hierarchy. Funke deploys as a Declarative Automation Bundle and ingestion pipeline that stores parsed messages in Unity Catalog, succeeding the 2021 open-source Smolder library.
WHO IS INVOLVED
Databricks built Funke as an Industry Solutions accelerator for healthcare organizations that depend on HL7v2 messaging standards to exchange clinical data between systems. The library is open source under the Databricks License and available on GitHub.
WHY IT MATTERS
HL7v2 messages are complex nested structures that organizations typically convert to other formats or hand to third-party vendors, adding cost and latency. Funke lets healthcare teams parse HL7 messages losslessly into the lakehouse as first-class data, governed by Unity Catalog, so analysts can query clinical data directly without data movement or format conversion.
