Dutch chip-security startup Fortaegis raises $50M to root trust in silicon
Published 19 September 2026
WHAT HAPPENED
Fortaegis, an Amsterdam-based semiconductor security company, raised $50 million in an early VC round on September 14. The funding from Serendipity Capital, Tokyo Electron Venture Capital, and Dutch research organisation TNO will support commercialisation of a security architecture that uses physical chip characteristics as a foundation for trust and encryption.
WHO IS INVOLVED
Fortaegis is working with roughly 25 companies and government organisations across defence, space, telecommunications and data centres. Investors include Serendipity Capital, Tokyo Electron Venture Capital, and TNO, which holds both strategic and financial stakes.
WHY IT MATTERS
The technology addresses two security challenges: autonomous machines that need fast authentication, and the quantum computing threat to current cryptography. By anchoring security in unavoidable manufacturing variations that make each chip unique, Fortaegis offers hardware-rooted trust that does not depend on stored cryptographic secrets, positioning Europe in a strategic technology that governments view as critical infrastructure.
